Christian Oppression
I have been reading and hearing far more than I would like lately about how christians are oppressed or belittled in our society. Every time I hear anything about this, I want to shoot a puppy it frustrates me so much. So prepare for 2 cents:
Religion, regardless of the religion chosen is a CHOICE. A christian can wake up any morning they please, and say to themselves... "You know what? I don't want to be a christian any more... Today, I will be a Pastafarian." A black person, or gay person cannot wake up one morning, and make themselves white or straight. Black, gay, mentally defective or genius... These are all states of being. We are taught, in this most wondrous and progressive society, that people should be judged according to their actions, not the things about themselves that they cannot control. I agree whole heartedly.
So, we have thoroughly established chrisitanity as a choice... Let's consider the fact that it is not a choice without moral repercussions. Christianity has been around for just over 2000 years, and has been mastering the art of social oppression for about 1700 of those years. Its really interesting that so many of the negative christian values in our society are more than a thousand years old, but still well adhered to with no reason whatsoever. Someone who chooses to align with christianity chooses to align with this history of suffering. It's difficult to ignore how much the church has taken over the years, and how little it has given apart from shame, low self esteem, and codependency on the imaginary.
To acknowledge the inquisition, and to say "Look how far the christian religion has come!" Is always a laughable statement. The majority of America has a consituency that identifies as christian, and as a result, a womans right to choose is constantly under fire. Gay marriage is illegal in almost the entire country, and people actually make a legitimate stink about teaching "creation science in schools."
My middle school teacher once told me that religion and science did not have to be at odds. The more I learn, the more I am inclined to disagree. The original parable of Adam and Eve: The original sin was eating from the tree of knowledge. God gave man curiosity, and made him ignorant, and then told man not to seek knowledge. WTF is that? Anyway, it all boils down to this, in the eyes of the church: an uneducated congregation is a complacent congregation.
Anywho, I'm getting way off my point. My point is that religion is a choice, not a state of birth. No one is born a christian. Christianity is a poor moral choice, because you throw your hat into the ring of a lot of anti-progressive politics if you give those organizations power. Finally, Christians make up the voting majority of america.
It makes me sick to my ass to hear christians whining about oppression, when what I really see is attempts that christians have made over the years to oppress others beginning to fail. No one is attacking christians. There is not a single lynch mob in the US that hunts christians.
You are being oppressed because gay marriage is close to passing. You are being oppressed because science, instead of fairy tales are taught in school. You are being oppressed because people that aren't you are having abortions. You are being oppressed because people will poke fun at your beliefs.
Before you call others out for poking fun at your beliefs, have you ever told a black guy joke? a muslim joke? a rape joke? I bet the answer is yes. So why should people not make fun of your beliefs? Because they are sacred? Well so are those of people who hold differing beliefs than you, that you have worked so hard to be rid of over the past 500 years.
So: Christians: YOU ARE NOT OPPRESSED. you are the oppressors.
Claiming that you are oppressed is a spit in the face insult to: Gay people Native americans Agnostics Atheists Bhuddists Hindus Women lots more that I am not going to type out.
Jesus would slap the shit out of you people.
